Castle

Suggested time needed: 1 hour 30 minutes
Imagine living inside the fairytale castle. Explore the castle using our children’s ‘Step Inside’ activity sheet and try and imagine what it would have ben like to live here.  Climb the staircase to the top and see how far you can see over the Vale of Scarsdale and the surrounding countryside.
Picture what the Terrace Range would have looked like in its former glory and visit the Riding House where the horses would have been trained to dance! 

Gardens

There is plenty of space to explore, the ruined Terrace is the perfect place for a game of ‘hide and seek‘ and there is lots of green space for charging and playing.  

Discovery Centre

Plenty to do for all the family in our Discovery Centre with its fascinating audio-visual displays and the re-created ‘Little Castle’ for the little ones!

Eating

If the weather is fine bring a picnic and find a spot to enjoy your lunch whilst enjoying panoramic views over the Vale of Scarsdale and the surrounding countryside.
Our café offers a wide selection of tasty light bites including a variety of sandwiches, soups and light bites. Children can choose from a selection of lunchtime treats and put together their own ‘Little Squires’ box.

Hardwick Old Hall

Distance: 6.5 miles
Hardwick Old Hall stands beside the New Hall she raised later in the 1590s. Though the Old Hall is now roofless, visitors can still ascend four floors to view surviving decorative plasterwork, as well as the kitchen and service rooms.
A recently installed exhibition in the West Lodge describes Bess’s adventures in architecture, and how she transformed her birthplace from a medieval manor house into a luxurious Elizabethan mansion. A new audio tour tells Bess’s story.

Hardwick Estate

Distance: 6.5 miles
Spend the whole day at Hardwick and visit the Hardwick Estate (National Trust) and see the amazing New Hall and beautiful gardens and surroundings. Joint tickets for both properties are available. Hardwick Old Hall is the original birthplace of Bess of Hardwick, one of the richest and most remarkable women of Elizabethan England. The Old Hall stands beside the New Hall raised later in the 1590s.
