Enquiry Service

Free Enquiries
The NMR offers a free basic enquiry service, designed to answer simple questions. Complete the online enquiry form or write to us if you would like to know:

• what archaeological sites we know of in a specified area;
• what air photographs we hold for a specified area; or
• what archival information we hold on a single building.

Our specialist staff will search the NMR on your behalf free of charge and write to tell you what relevant material we hold. Enquiries are answered on a first come, first served basis. We aim to reply within three weeks, although it may take longer at busy periods.

Priority Search Service
A priority service is available for users who cannot wait for our free service. We offer a priority service for those requiring a rapid indication of our holdings for a single site. For the priority search service, we will despatch an indication of relevant holdings by first-class post within two working days of receipt of the enquiry. All response times are subject to the receipt of your enquiry before noon. A fee is charged for every priority search.  Please call us for more details of this service Tel 01793 414600.

Research Service
If your question does not fit easily within the scope of our free search service (eg if you are interested in a number of sites or in a building type), you may wish to use our research service. Where we carry out research on your behalf a fee will normally be charged. We will contact you before carrying out a search to advise. Due to limited staff resource, we may not be able to carry out very complex or voluminous requests.

Local Studies Resource Packs
The NMR can supply copies of aerial photographs for any single locality in England based on your chosen area. This service will be of interest to anyone researching their local area. The photographs are copied from the NMR’s collection of aerial photography, mostly black and white vertical photographs taken between 1945 and 1985. In addition we will supply information from our heritage database on the archaeology and listed buildings in your area.

Each pack includes:

• 3 historical aerial photographs, laser copied onto A3 size paper;
• an index of the listed buildings in your parish;
• full listings from our heritage database on the archaeology in your area.
  

Each pack costs £15.00 including VAT. Please do not send any money with your order as we will invoice you. To order your pack, please write to us with either a six figure Ordnance Survey grid reference or a copy of a map with the centre of your site marked.  Alternatively you can send your order by e-mail to nmrinfo@english-heritage.org.uk
