A fine early Norman castle, set in an attractive moors-edge market town, Pickering is a classic and well-preserved example of an early earthwork castle refortified in stone during the 13th and 14th centuries. There is an exhibition in the chapel and family-friendly books and activities.

Access to castle and grounds: Ramp at castle entrance. Access is on impacted gravel paths and smooth grass, apart from inside towers. Slopes in some areas - assistance may be required. 80 steep steps, with handrail, to top of motte.
Toilets: Accessible WC in car park.
Exhibition: In chapel, via ramp.

75m from entrance; loose gravel surface. Some parking spaces for disabled visitors nearer the entrance.
Visually Impaired Visitors:
Sounds of bird song and steam railway below. NB Partially sighted visitors should bring a companion because of deep unfenced ditches and steps.
