Robin
Publishing Manager
What is your job and how did you come to work for English Heritage?
It all started with contract work in 1984, leading to a permanent post in 1986. An archaeologist by training, I have always been fascinated by how we present and publish information. I am lucky to be able to combine my expertise and interest in the post of Publishing Manager.
Do you have a typical day?
We often imagine that we are going to deal with something only to end up doing something else entirely! Our day-to-day work is about managing projects – finding solutions and making things happen – and working with authors to create interesting and exciting products. There is a lot of variety in putting a book through its various stages – a blend of art, science and craft – which is very satisfying when you have the finished product in your hands. Particularly so, when we get a big “thank you” from the author too!
What does it feel like to work for English Heritage?
English Heritage is an extraordinarily diverse organisation, covering a wide range of activities, many of which we are involved with. We have highly committed and very professional colleagues: this can make projects very demanding, but adds to the intrinsic interest of what we do. There is a fantastic team spirit that makes work a good deal of fun! What other organisation would pay you to do what you are fascinated by?
