The Battle of the Standard

The Battle of the Standard

When Scots King David invaded England for the third time in the summer of 1138, his army was able to besiege Wark and move south into Yorkshire. Thurstan, Archbishop of York, gathered local barons and with the city militias of York, Beverly and Ripon they marched under religious banners, or standards, bearing the symbols of the patron saints of their cities: St Peter, St John and St Wilfred. It is these standards that eventually gave name to the conflict that followed.
