Chariot Racing

The drivers of these chariots, although usually slaves, often became celebrities and, if they were sufficiently sucessful, could buy their freedom with their winnings. The most important chariots they raced were quadrigas which were pulled by four horses. These chariots became symbols of victory and glory and were thought of as the vehicles of the gods.
