Between 11 October 1899 and 31 May 1902, Dutch-speaking settlers in South Africa (known as Boers: Dutch and Afrikaans for 'farmer') and the British Empire fought a series of battles as the British tried to extend their colonies into the gold-rich independant Boer republics of Transvaal and the Orange Free State.
