Blood on the Veldt

The Boer forces enjoyed some earlier military sucesses: at the battle of Colenso on 15 December 1899, 8,000 Boers defended the Tugela River against 21,000 British Troops, suffering only 40 casualties. As the war continues, the British destroyed the Boers' farms, villages and crops, driving their families into camps, many dying of malnutrition and disease. The remaining Boer troops finally surrendered at Vereeniging on 31 May 1902.
