Old Oswestry

Ground photo of lower ramparts, Old Oswestry hillfort, Shropshire  Old Oswestry is one of the most recognisable hillforts in England. It is a large, multivallate hillfort with a unique range of 'pits' on either side of its western entrance. The date and purpose of these pits is a complete mystery and no comparable features have been found on any other site. During the early medieval period the hillfort was incorporated into the line of Wat's Dyke, perhaps suggesting later re-use. Interpretation of the hillfort is based largely upon excavations carried out by W Varley in 1939-40.

This year we have carried out a detailed field survey and investigation of the site with the aim of resolving some of the unanswered questions about its development and use. A report outlining the results of this work is in progress. For more information contact nicky.smith@english-heritage.org.uk

The hillfort is under English Heritage's guardianship and is open as a free site all year round.
