Travel back in time to uncover the dramatic story of Whitby Abbey, from its foundation by Anglo Saxon royalty to the present day. Use your detective skills to find clues that tell you how the abbey was built. Examine real and replica objects to learn about the lives of the people who lived here. Put yourselves in the sandals of a novice monk descending the night stairs for prayer, and find out who was who in medieval society. Dicovery why the abbey looks as it does today, and also why Whitby was one of the most important monastic sites in England for hundreds of years.
Please note: this session will take place entirely out of doors unless the weather is exceptionally bad. Please be aware that there are no toilets available on site. There are public toilets near the car park entrance, located 5 minutes walk from the visitor centre.
