Monuments at Risk

Reducing the Risk

When damaged or lost, scheduled monuments cannot be replaced and so urgent action should be taken to ensure that we can pass them on to future generations in good condition.  The amount of effort required to ensure their survival for the future is often minimal and inexpensive, for example removing bramble, re-routing a footpath or protecting against burrowing rabbits is frequently all that is required.

We are in the process of identifying clear priorities for management action both within English Heritage and with our partners.  English Heritage cannot deliver the actions required alone. We particularly require the co-operation of major institutional landowners and those organisations capable of influencing future land management.

We are working closely with the Heritage Lottery Fund and Natural England to focus grant aid for repairing and managing scheduled monuments and providing guidance on sustainable long-term solutions to areas that are poorly understood such as arable cultivation.  To view guidance to date visit  the Historic Environment Local Management web site.  If you are a land manager and would like to find out information such as the location and extent of sites, visit the English Heritage National Monuments Record website and get in touch with your local authority Historic Environment Records.
