Wanstead Grove Conservation Area, Wanstead, London
Local authority
London Borough of Redbridge
Brief description and history:
This conservation area was designated very recently in March 2009 and is an attractive and well preserved area of Arts and Crafts housing, although there has been some loss of historic detail and inappropriate alterations, such as monoblock paving, mock-Victorian gates and lamp standards.
Is it at risk?
No. Its recent designation as a conservation area came about as a result of local residents’ action who believed that the Conservation Area status would help them in fighting against what they consider inappropriate development in the Wanstead “Counties Estate”.
The groups involved in the campaign were the Counties Estate Residents Association and the Wanstead Society.
