How to search the English Heritage archives and databases to research Women's History

Florence Nightingale Florence Nightingale The National Monuments Record (NMR) is the public archive of English Heritage and holds over 10 million records, photographs, plans and documents. If you're trying to find out more about Women's History in general, or about buildings or places linked to women, then we may have resources of interest to you.

Using the example of Florence Nightingale, we will show you just how much you can find out about women's history online.

Images of England

With over 320,000 contemporary colour photographs of England's listed buildings.  So if you know of a listed building linked to particular woman we may have an image of it available, together with the listing record. 

If you don't know of any particular buildings, then by searching by the name of the person you're researching you may find links to a building  you didn't know about before.

Or you can use the site to can search through the images linked to a particular place or time in history, helping you build a picture of a specific time or location.

This website holds over 80,000 historic photographs from the 1850s up to the present day.

PastScape

Enables you to search 400,000 records of England's archaeological and architectural heritage.  These records include building descriptions, images and maps if available, as well as details of investigations.
