These photographs, together with some others in the case studies section, are from the National Monuments Record (NMR), the public archive of English Heritage. It is one of the largest publicly accessible archives in the UK and the biggest dedicated to the historic environment.

The NMR holds over 10 million items including photographs of historic buildings dating from the 1850s to the present day and aerial photographs covering all areas of England. Subjects range from architectural details to prehistoric landscapes, from country houses to coal mines.
