RESTORATION

Tintagel Castle

Improvements to access routes at Tintagel Improvements to access routes at Tintagel Improvements have been made to visitor facilities at Tintagel Castle, including new steps to the beach and Merlin’s Cave.

Clifford’s Tower

With the help of the Development Fund, English Heritage has been able to introduce a new interpretative scheme at Clifford’s Tower.

WORKS OF ART

Bolsover Castle

Titus - one of the Twelve Caesars Titus - one of the Twelve Caesars The series of historic paintings, The Twelve Caesars has been held in store at Audley End House since the 1970s.  The Development Fund has enabled English Heritage to install the paintings in the second floor rooms at Bolsover Castle, and to use them to tell the story of the castle’s later history.

FURNISHINGS

Marble Hill House

English Heritage, thanks to Development Fund monies, has been able to re-hang the Dining Parlour at Marble Hill House with Chinoiserie wallpaper according to the original 1750s scheme.  Replicating the wallpaper and redisplaying the Dining Parlour is part of an ongoing attempt to show Marble Hill as a historic house rather than a picture gallery. 

EXHIBITIONS, EDUCATION & OUTREACH

Down House

Down House, Downe, Kent  Down House, Downe, KentIn 2004 English Heritage set up a small exhibition on Emma Darwin at Down House.  The Development Fund helped to provide for a temporary exhibition focusing on Emma’s life, travels and role in the Darwin household.  The publishing of a biography in 2004 made the subject especially pertinent, and the exhibition was mounted again from early Summer to December 2005 for a second run.

Lindisfarne Priory

The museum at Lindisfarne was set up in the mid 1980s and after nearly 20 years needed urgent improvement.  The Development Fund has been used to replace the out-dated elements of the display, improving and making more of the display of artefacts and creating a space which is better configured for visitors to the site.

Muchelney Abbey

Thanks to the help of the Development Fund, English Heritage has been able to redisplay pottery, stonework and metalwork from the Abbey, combined with new introductory interpretative panels and room panels.

Tilbury Fort

Tilbury Fort interpretation Tilbury Fort, Essex The Development Fund has enabled English Heritage to replace the existing panels at Tilbury Fort with a new interpretative display about Tilbury and its history, making better use of reproduction powder barrels and historic cannon.  This is the first stage in a development of access and interpretation plans for Tilbury, which will put in place a broader strategy for presentation and community use.

Helmsley Castle

Helmsley Castle visitor centre Helmsley Castle visitor centre, Yorkshire outreach programmeWith the help of the Development Fund, English Heritage has been able to implement a project that will upgrade the castle and enable Helmsley to take its place among other major tourist destinations in Yorkshire.  The project included the development of a new visitor centre, the creation of a major exhibition area, new interpretation facilities, and significant improvements to access arrangements within and around the site.  The castle is now home to the most extensive and best-preserved collection of relics from any northern English castle.
