Curators' Choice at Audley End House

"We thoroughly enjoyed our visit, first time to Audley End. The talk was very informative and we learnt a lot about Tudor portraiture as well as those whose portraits were being painted, both with regard to their connection to the house and to the social period of the time. The refreshments provided on arrival and at lunch were very plentiful and tasty. It has encouraged us to visit again."

Exclusive Guided Tour with Dr Simon Thurley - Bolsover Castle

"The last members event my wife and I attended was to Bolsover Castle on 25th January. Your programme described it as a very special guided tour and indeed in every respect it lived up to that description. Dr Simon Thurley was a superb guide; his knowledge, scholarship and understanding of the castle, the site, and its history brought it alive with excellent delivery as indeed was also the case at Kenilworth Castle.

In support of Dr Thurley the English Heritage staff were friendly and helpful. The catering was first class; we had travelled some distance and were greeted with wonderful cakes and coffee. The tour was concluded with a beautifully prepared delicious lunch.

This is the first year we have attended Members Events; four in total and my praise and satisfaction applies to them all. All the guides have an in-depth knowledge and treat the group as intelligent adults. English Heritage are head and shoulders above other comparable organizations in this respect."

"Ooo, the Members' Event was just fabulous.  Cannot praise it enough.  We have been raving about it to friends and family since Wednesday. It was a present for my husband's birthday. He introduced me to English Heritage and we are both big fans. Simon Thurley is our hero.

It was all excellent. To be greeted with a cuppa and a big slab of delicious homemade cake was obviously the perfect start. The timing suited us well. It didn't start too early and didn't last over-long, but long enough that we felt we'd seen and learned plenty. Dr Thurley was charming and delightful as well as a source of entertaining information. The lunch was very good. I thought it was good that there was no faffing about - we were presented with a large and delicious main course, and then offered a choice of two splendid puddings. And there was even a glass of decent wine.

At the end I said to my husband, 'I can't remember what we paid for this but I would have paid more.' 'Me too,' he said. We also agreed that we would love to attend more events when we can fit them in, and even if Dr Thurley wasn't the guide, we'd still enjoy it.

And then we also got a free guide book. So all in all, every wish was catered for, including ones we didn't know we had.

Really, really marvellous."

Exclusive Guided Tour with Dr Simon Thurley & Dr Anna Keay - Kenilworth Castle

"I felt like a V.I.P. Being part of such a small group, having such a fascinating property to ourselves (because it was closed to the public) and listening to such knowledgeable, enthusiastic and prestigious guides as Simon Thurley and Anna Keay felt like a real privilege.

Thank you very much for giving members unique opportunities and experiences like these."
Julie Seagroatt

"We were transported through the ages of Kenilworth Castle by Simon Thurley with assistance from Anna Keay. Their interpretation brought the Castle to life and we were taken back in time to the lives and events of the castle and its surrounds over 1000 years. No question went unanswered, and we were all encouraged to take part in the day which commenced with coffee and finished with lunch, both taken in the spectacular Old Gatehouse. The only disappointment was that the day was over so quickly.

Both presenters made themselves available throughout the day to answer wider questions on EH matters and other properties. The shop was open, with tastings on offer and a guide book was given to each attendee as further reading.

A wonderful day that we all hoped would be replicated at other EH properties in the future."

JW Evans - Conserving Industrial Heritage

"We first visited J W Evans premises when EH organised a behind the scenes look at the factory and their ongoing conservation work. That was a good visit but there were drawbacks, there was scaffolding everywhere, some parts were off limits and the overall impression was one of organised confusion. Now that the conservation work has been completed, our latest visit was absolutely brilliant.

The scaffolding had gone, pretty much everywhere was available to see and best of all the machines were operational and one of the old employees was there to demonstrate Factories such as J W Evans and their like were once ever present in the English towns and cities of the C19 and C20 and they made the England that we remember. It is vital that this memory is safeguarded and protected. Well done EH and for making good use of Tony's memories."

JW Evans - Machinery Demonstration

"Excellent!  I did not know what to expect and had no idea that the factory was so small and that it had been in use up to 3 years ago! The atmosphere had been preserved as if the employees had just left and you could really imagine how hard, noisy and dirty it would have been.

There was a photo of women wearing white aprons....wondered if they were specially put on for the photo as they would not have stayed pristine in those conditions!

Would like more of such visits as, being in a small group, and having a detailed talk by an enthusiastic curator, brought the place to life."
