Lots of churches around the country are in trouble and we need your help!

This year English Heritage are running a project, called Inspired!, to help save the churches.

Churches aren’t just places to go and pray. Why not get your parents to take you to your local church and see what you can do to help.

Here are some fun facts about churches in England that you might not know.

  • There are a total of 16,151 churches and places of worship in England
  • Churches are not just religious places and 86 per cent of us visit a church or place of worship in the course of a year, for reasons like attending social events or simply wanting a quiet space to have some time out.
  • Churches can also be used for drama and music clubs, jumble sales, table tennis tournaments, dances
  • Did you know that bats that live in churches are protected species?
  • Did you also know that there is a cat flap at Exeter Cathedral?
  • The oldest church in England is 1409 years old and was built by Saint Augustine…that’s probably 140 times older than you and can be found in Canterbury
  • A city is called a city only if it has a Cathedral and there are 42 Cathedrals in England which are open every day of the year
  • On average, over 1.2 million people go to church each week
  • 43% of people living in England attended church at Christmas
  • Over 235,00 young people, attend church every week
  • Each year over 300,000 pupils visit churches on school visits
  • Three of England's top five historic 'visitor attractions' are York Minster, Canterbury Cathedral and Westminster Abbey
