It's 1644 and Helmsley Castle is under siege! 

Experience all the action from Helmsley Castle's first and last military engagement. Watch the drama unfold as Sir Thomas Fairfax and the forces of Parliament attempt to wrest control of Helmsley Castle from the determined Royalist Garrison. 

Visit the encampments on both sides to find out what life was like in 1644 and enjoy music from the period with Hautbois. Children can also find out if they have what it takes to become a soldier during the Civil War in our children's drill sessions!

Hear a proclamation by the Governor as the Royalists escort the civilians from the Castle!

11.30am          SIEGE Performance - The call to surrender (Attackers Camp)
Join us as the Siege begins! Witness the arrival of the Parliamentarian troops and hear the call to surrender.

12.00pm         Music of a Bygone Age (Inner Bailey)
Enjoy music of the period performed by Hautbois.

12.00pm         Join the Parliament Army! Children's Drill (Parliamentarian Camp) Calling all Junior Soldiers! Have you got what it takes to join the Parliament Army?

12.30pm         The Art of the Siege Engineer 
Find out more about siege weapons of the time.

1.15pm           'Useless mouths from the Castle'
Hear a proclamation by the Governor as the Royalists escort the civilians from the Castle!

1.30pm           SIEGE - The first assault!
Witness the firepower of the Parliamentarian force as they attempt to siege the Castle.

2.00pm           Music of a Bygone Age (Inner Bailey)
Enjoy music of the period performed by Hautbois.

2.00pm           Join the Parliament Army! Children's Drill (Parliamentarian Camp)

Please Note:

  • Access to the Siege battles is via the Outer ditch - please follow instructions from signs and staff.
  • There will be no access to the living history camps and certain areas of the castle during the main performances at 11.30am, 1.30pm and 3.30pm. Please follow instructions from all signs and staff
  • Please do not cross any barriers or touch anything unless invited to do so by staff or the performers.
  • Some activities may not take place in the event of very poor weather.
  • There will be loud noises and heavy use of weapons at this event.
  • Dogs are welcome but must be kept on a lead at all times.
