Kids make history by 'taking over' Stonehenge this summer

For the first time in its 4,500-year-old history, children are invited to step inside the stone circle at Stonehenge and discover it without any grown-ups, as part of English Heritage’s new Kids Takeover summer season.

To launch the season, English Heritage asked 1,066 children* to help compile a list of the 25 fun activities from the past they’d most like to do and today, English Heritage brings to life wish number 10 from The English Heritage History Wish List – ‘Step Inside The Stone Age’.

The wish has been granted with the help of eight-year-old Thea Hunt, English Heritage’s first ever Child Executive Officer, and a Round Table of children from across the country. From battling pirates to juggling with a jester, English Heritage, Thea and the Round Table will be making the remaining history wishes happen at castles, forts and palaces across the country this summer.

Throughout August, English Heritage is providing exclusive ‘Kids Only’ Stone Circle Visits at Stonehenge every Wednesday morning. Adults can watch from the sidelines as their children enjoy an exclusive and memorable encounter with the ancient stones.

Emily Sewell, Head of Events at English Heritage, comments: “We asked children what they most wanted to do this summer. Now we’re making their wishes happen, starting with Stonehenge where children will be able to get up close to the stones and experience them for the first time completely on their own. This is just the beginning, there’ll be plenty of more exciting events chosen by kids, for kids at our castles, forts and palaces over the summer holidays.”

Thea Hunt, Child Executive Officer at English Heritage, said: “Today was so much fun. Up close, the stones are enormous! It’s incredible to think of our ancestors lifting them thousands and thousands of years ago. Getting the stone circle all to ourselves is a fantastic idea. And it’s just one of the many history wishes that I’m helping English Heritage make happen for children this summer.”

The Kids Only Stone Circle Visits at Stonehenge must be booked in advance and take place every Wednesday morning in August, between 7.30am and 8.30am. Entry is £10 for one child and one adult and includes entry to the Stonehenge visitor and exhibition centre. Limited spaces available and each child must be accompanied by an adult. Visit the Stonehenge Events Pages to book your place.
