Ghost Tales - Frequently asked questions

We’ve answered some common questions to help you plan your visit. If you have a question that isn't answered here, please see our Visit FAQs.

  • Do I need to pre-book tickets to this event?

Yes. Pre-booking is highly recommended to attend our Ghost Tales as these events are highly popular and may sell out. You can find details on how to book on the event page. Please make sure you bring your booking confirmation with you on the day.

  • When should I arrive?

There is an allocated time on your ticket. Please arrive promptly, otherwise, you may miss your tour, as each walk/tour must depart on time. If you arrive late we will try and accommodate you on a later tour if we can but this will be subject to availability.

When you arrive, follow the signs or instructions from a member of staff directing you to the waiting area.

  • Can we arrive earlier in the day for the event?

No. Our Ghost Tales are special events outside of our normal admission times.

You are welcome to visit the site earlier in the day on days that we are open, but you will need to book a separate ticket and standard daytime admission charges apply.

Please note that the site will close to the general public before the Ghost Tales begin. Any visitors on site will be asked to leave the property and re-enter for the event.

  • What should I bring with me?

The events take place outdoors in the dark, so please bring a torch with you to use during the tour and wear comfortable, sturdy footwear.

We recommend you wrap up warm and bring additional layers.

  • Is the event suitable for children?

This event is only suitable for those 16+. Anyone aged between 16-18 must be accompanied by an adult.

We reserve the right to refuse access to the event to anyone aged between 16-18 who is not accompanied by an adult.

  • Is the event suitable for those with accessibility needs?

As this tour takes place outside, some of the route may be off of the main pathways and instead on grass and/or uneven terrain and some routes may involve steps. It may be difficult to navigate wheelchairs over this ground.

The tour will take approximately 45 minutes and will have 3-4 stopping points where our guides will tell a story. Please also be aware that there is likely to be no seating on the route.

Accessible toilets and blue badge holder parking is available at our properties. Please check directly with our Customer Services team by calling 0370 333 1181 for further details of the route at each property.

  • Where can I go during this event?

Our spooky guide will lead you along the tour. Please ensure you follow your guide at all times as other areas of the site may be poorly lit and potentially hazardous. Please do not attempt to cross any barriers or roped off areas.

  • What happens if it’s raining?

Wellington boots and umbrellas are advised in the event of wet weather. The Ghost Tales will only be cancelled in extreme weather conditions and this will be communicated to you in advance of the event taking place using the contact details you have supplied when booking your ticket.

  • Will there be food and drink?

There may not be refreshments at this event. We'd recommend checking with the site you are visiting and bringing a drink and snacks with you.

  • Please note

If at any point of the event you feel unwell please ask a member of staff or your tour guide for assistance. English Heritage reserves the right to refuse entry to anyone deemed to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Aggressive, abusive or disruptive behaviour will not be tolerated.
