For 500 years Carlisle Castle was the principal fortress of England’s north-western border with Scotland. Besieged no fewer than ten times, this walking tour will delve into the fascinating history of the siege’s at Carlisle Castle. Join site manager John Bonner to hear how each siege developed over the years; from undermining the walls in 1216 to the introduction of siege engines in 1315. How the siege of 1461 was one of the bloodiest episodes of the War of the Roses (and one of the earliest uses of artillery), through to the last sieges and the use of gunpowder in both1645 and 1745. Light refreshments will be served on site after the tour.
