Back for summer 2022! The excavations of Birdoswald Roman Fort have begun and once again you have the opportunity to enjoy a guided tour of the excavations. See the past unfold before your eyes as we discover the 2,000 year old history hidden beneath the soil
The excavation project is a collaboration between Newcastle University, Historic England and English Heritage where experts and students from Newcastle University guide you round the fort, explaining the excavations and the exciting history of the fort.
Tours last up to 1.5 hours and include an introduction to the fort and previous excavations followed by a tour of the current excavations. The recommend minimum age is 8 but all ages are welcome. The tours take place outside so please dress for the conditions.

The guided tours are free, however, general admission still applies.
To book a guided tour of the excavations, simply book a normal admission ticket online and add a free Birdoswald Archaeology tour to your booking. The tours take place Monday to Friday at 11am and 2pm, so make sure to select a weekday when booking your admission ticket.
