Rievaulx AbbeySUITABLE FOR
Join Tony Powell (lecturer on English Social History, who has researched and studied the Cistercian community of Rievaulx for the last twenty years) for a comprehensive walking tour of the Rievaulx Valley. Take in the broader environs of the Abbey and appreciate the size and complexity of the organisation needed when the Abbey precincts were at their peak. The tour will enable members to glimpse the sheer scale of the working Abbey complex, including the locations of such important areas as the fishponds, the stone quarries, fresh water springs and the original course of the River Rye, as well as the central Abbey itself. The tour will last approx. 3 hours and will involve a lot of walking, including some steep hills and uneven surfaces. A light lunch will be served in the Rievaulx café after the tour. Members will also have time to enjoy the Abbey including the on-site museum.
This event has been graded as challenging access as the tour involved lots of walking over hills and uneven ground. There are limited rest stops along the route and no shelter on the tour.
