Our month-long Medieval May Festival offers an exciting blend of history, culture, and entertainment. With events spanning from early May to the end of the month, there’s something for everyone—whether you’re a history buff, a lover of dance, or simply looking for a day of adventure.
Explore the Gainsborough Medieval Town Trail – 1st to 31st May 2025

Step back in time and uncover the medieval secrets of Gainsborough with our self-guided Medieval Town Trail, available throughout May. This family-friendly trail invites visitors to explore the town’s historic streets, guided by a specially designed Trail Sheet that brings the past to life through fun facts and playful medieval characters.
Start your journey by collecting a Trail Sheet from The Works at Marshalls Yard. As you follow the route through the town, look out for playful medieval characters and that capture the spirit of medieval Gainsborough. Your adventure ends at the magnificent Gainsborough Old Hall, where trail participants will be entered into a draw to win hamper.
Highlights of the Festival:
Medieval Graffiti Tours - every Sunday in May at 1pm
Discover the hidden secrets of the hall as you embark on a graffiti tour! Learn about the ancient marks left by past visitors, including symbols, initials, and messages etched into the walls of the hall by medieval inhabitants. These fascinating graffiti offer a rare glimpse into the lives of those who lived here centuries ago. Join our expert guide who will take you back in time as you discover these marks.

Medieval Dance Workshops - Saturday 24th May
Put on your dancing shoes and take part in our medieval dance workshops with De Mowbray’s Musicke ! Learn traditional dances from the Middle Ages, from lively circle dances to elegant courtly steps. Whether you're a beginner or an experienced dancer, our instructors will guide you through the rhythms and movements of the past in a fun, interactive way.
Medieval Housewife display - 1st and 17th May
Joing us in the Old Kitchen to find out what a medieval housewife’s duties would have been and handle some of the objects she’d have used.
Goldwork Demonstrations - Every Sunday in May
Join our Make and Mend volunteers as the demonstrate the facinating art of goldwork - a form of embroidery that utilizes metal threads and has been used for thousands of years.
