Housesteads Roman Fort - Hadrian's WallSUITABLE FOR
Join Senior Historian Paul Pattison on this walk in the footsteps of the Roman inhabitants of Vercovicium, today known as Housesteads, a fort and settlement sited on the summit and slope of a lofty hilltop in the dramatic, rocky central sector of Hadrian's Wall.
Hear about the 260-year span of the fort and its frontier community, the contrasting lifestyles of the fort commander and his 800 soldiers, their origins in the Roman world, their daily routines and the gods and goddesses they worshipped. And prepare to be intrigued by an ancient 'whodunnit' mystery and a den of thieves who lived in the fort long after the Romans.
We advise suitable clothing for the weather and appropriate footwear for walking, as the tour will take place outside. Please note that the museum is approximately 750m uphill from the car park, and the site can be muddy and difficult to navigate in poor weather, so this event is graded as challenging access.
