Members' event:

Looking after the natural areas of Walmer Castle Gardens

DATE

Wed 12 Jun 2024

TIME

11am - 12pm

LOCATION

Walmer Castle and Gardens

SUITABLE FOR

Adults

Walmer Castle is known for its acres of well-maintained and award-winning formal gardens, but for Great Big Green Week we are looking at the more natural areas within the grounds.

This tour will take you through the two-acre meadow within the gardens, looking at unusual plant species and our project creating a King’s Meadow in one of our paddocks. You will hear how we maintain this meadow and how you can create wilder areas like this in your own home garden, even with limited space.

We will explain what work we do on our grazing grounds to turn them into a hay meadow buzzing with insects and full of native plant species and wildlife. Apart from going through the meadows, the tour will also pass through the woodland where you will be shown how we encourage wildlife habitat.

This event is graded as moderate access due to the length of the tour and navigating uneven terrain.
