From turkey and crackers to figgy pudding and Father Christmas, the festive season as we know it today has its roots in the Victorian era. This December, take a trip back in time at beautiful Osborne, and delight in our best ever celebration of the perfect Victorian Christmas, including an audience with Santa Claus himself and festive lights after dark.
Surround yourself with good cheer as the sound of music and the smell of roasting chestnuts fills the air. Be captivated by skillful Victorian toy makers, as your children make toys of their very own to take home. Have a go at traditional games, take a ride on the carousel and delight in the jovial entertainers. Be thrilled as the Victorian Falconer reveals unusual techniques for catching festive fare, and listen to seasonal stories of winter birds. Polish your manners at our school for butlers, or marvel at daring jesters and their breath-taking fire shows.
After the excitement of our outdoor entertainments, head indoors, for Osborne will become Father Christmas’ home-away-from-home for the entire weekend. Join in an audience with the man himself, as he tells yuletide tales amidst the festive decorations of Osborne’s spectacular ground floor rooms.
In between, warm up with a tipple from our Christmas courtyard and choose the perfect gift from our stallholders. Grab a song sheet and sing carols as snowflakes drift in the breeze. A fast paced and humorous retelling of Dickens’ A Christmas Carol will have you laughing out loud, or you can huddle round to enjoy the Victorian tradition of Christmas ghost stories.
New this year, experience Victorian Christmas after dark as the festivities continue into the evening. Gather to watch Father Christmas throw the switch on our festive lights, then gain a new perspective on the beauty of Osborne as you sip mulled wine and wander among the softly lit grounds.
