Putting pupils in the picture

A year-long project devised by Fran Lashmar, South East Education Manager for English Heritage and teachers from Dover Grammar School comes to fruition this September when some rather unusual self-portraits produced by 12-15 year-old pupils from the School go on display At Dover Town Hall.

The portraits are recreations of 17th and 18th century originals by Gainsborough and other celebrated artists from the collection at Kenwood House, substituting the pupils themselves for the historical figures featured in them. "The Kenwood portraits project gave pupils a unique insight into the nature of portrait painting in the 17th and 18th centuries", says Fran. "When they converted their creations into self-portraits they also had the chance to learn how to work in oils on canvas - just one example of how art at our sites can be used creatively by learning groups!"
