North East

The English Heritage office for the North East is based in Newcastle and provides a regional base for over 30 members of staff across our Planning and Development, Visitor Operations, Marketing, Estates and Outreach teams.

Our work in the region includes:

  • providing guidance and statutory advice on managing the region's historic environment to local authorities, owners and other partner organisations
  • maintaining and conserving the 43 historic sites and properties in our regional care
  • giving grants to secure the future of the region's protected historic sites and buildings; providing funding for the regeneration of conservation areas and supporting local communities in looking after their heritage though our capacity building programme
  • working with partner organisations from across the region to conserve and promote the historic environment
  • encouraging lifelong learning through educational visits to our historic properties and sites
  • helping new audiences to understand and enjoy the region's heritage through outreach projects with local communities
  • producing annual monitoring data on the region's historic environment through 'Heritage at Risk' and 'Heritage Counts'.
