English Heritage supports others in managing the historic environment in a number of ways. It can be through strategic initiatives which help us understand the challenges of managing heritage assets better, through providing grant aid for repairs, and through building skills and capacity.
Here are a few current highlights to give a flavour of what we do in the South West.
Localism and Heritage Conference Report
English Heritage and Bristol City Council jointly hosted a conference to explore what the localism agenda means for the heritage sector in the South West and in the city of Bristol.
The 'Localism and Heritage' event considered ways in which local authorities and communities could work together to understand and conserve their local heritage assets.
A full report, films of the key speeches and copies of the presentations will shortly be available.
Heritage at Risk
The annual Heritage at Risk report tracks the condition of the South West's most vulnerable historic assets.
The area has the highest number of scheduled monuments in England, and a significant proportion are at high risk. However good progress is being made by working in partnership with owners, land managers and other agencies, particularly Natural England, to find solutions to protect and enhance vulnerable scheduled monuments.
