Rievaulx Abbey

One of the most atmospheric of all the great ruined abbeys of the north, Rievaulx Abbey, has a history dating back to the 12th-century. The Abbey reflected the philosophy of Cistercian monastic life of the great abbot, St. Aelred: being self-sufficient and far removed from other settlements.
