Battlefield Designation Criteria and Grading

Criteria

At present English Heritage is undertaking a revision of the original criteria in the light of battlefield studies over the last decade, and especially the growing realisation of the potential which battlefiled archaeology has to advance our understanding of these sites. In the meantime please contact your nearest English Heritage office if you require a copy of the current criteria for battlefield registration.

Grading

Unlike listing and the Register of Parks and Gardens, registered battlefields are not currently graded as a means of ascribing relative significance. While all battlefields included on the Register are considered to be of a sufficiently high level of interest to merit a national designation, the feasibility of grading battlefields, for the sake of cross-asset consistency, is under consideration.
