Byker Estate was constructed to encourage a sense of community and is one of the most influential European social housing schemes of the twentieth century. A conservation plan was published in 2005 and was listed a Grade II* site in 2007

Heritage Counts 2008 is the seventh annual survey of the state of England’s historic environment. It highlights the key developments in region between 2007 and 2008 including information on number of historical assets, planning consents, funding, participation in the heritage sector, heritage at risk and key policy developments.  

This report is one of nine regional reports and has been prepared by English Heritage on behalf of the North East Heritage Forum.
