We're challenging you to get creative and make your own mini Norman motte-and-bailey castle. You could make it from cake, modelling clay, papier mâché - anything goes!

How to enter

Motte-and-Bailey Castles

After taking power, the Normans built castles all over England to assert their authority. At first, these were fairly simple fortifications with a wooden or stone keep on a raised earth hill called a motte, and a courtyard, or bailey below, surrounded by a ditch and fence.

Enter the competition

We've got a cool goody bag worth £100 to give away to the young reader who makes the best mini motte-and-bailey castle. The more creative and fun your castle is the better!

To enter the competition ask a grown-up take a photo of your creation and email your photos to membersmagazine@immediate.co.uk before midnight on Wednesday 28 February 2018.

Make sure your parent or guardian reads the terms and conditions below, and are happy that your entry might be shared on our website and even on our Instagram, Twitter or Facebook pages. Along with your photo be sure to include:

  • Details of how you created your castle
  • Your full name and age
  • Your parent's membership number, name, address and telephone number

Terms and Conditions

1. THE PROMOTER

1.1 The promoter is: English Heritage of The Engine House, Fire Fly Avenue, Swindon SN2 2EH.

2. THE COMPETITION

2.1 The title of the competition is 'make a mini motte-and-bailey castle'.
2.2  The format is a children's competition to create their own mini motte-and-bailey castle (out of a medium of their choosing), where the best entry, as judged by English Heritage staff, will win a goody bag of products from the English Heritage online shop.

3. HOW TO ENTER

3.1 The competition will run from publication to midnight on Wednesday 28 February 2018.
3.2  All competition entries must be received by English Heritage by no later than midnight on the Closing Date. All competition entries received after the Closing Date are automatically disqualified.
3.3 To enter the competition: enter the competition online by emailing your photo(s) to membersmagazine@immediate.co.uk by Closing Date, including;
a) Details of how you created your mosaic,
b) Your full name and age,
c) Your parent's membership number, name, address and telephone number.
3.4   English Heritage will not accept:
(a) responsibility for competition entries that are lost, mislaid, damaged or delayed in transit, regardless of cause, including, for example, as a result of any postal failure, equipment failure, technical malfunction, systems, satellite, network, server, computer hardware or software failure of any kind; or
(b) proof of posting or transmission as proof of receipt of entry to the competition.
3.5 By submitting a competition entry, you are agreeing to be bound by these terms and conditions.
3.6 The competition winner will be selected by English Heritage. The decision English Heritage makes acting reasonably will be final.
3.7 All entries submitted may be featured on the English Heritage website, social media channels and in printed publications. If you do not consent to your entry being published state this when sending in your entry.

4. ELIGIBILITY

4.1 The competition is only open to all residents in the UK aged 18 years and under,  except:
employees or members of their immediate families or households of English Heritage, Immediate Media, or any holding or subsidiary companies.
4.2 By entering the competition, you confirm that you are eligible to do so, have gained consent of a parent or guardian, and are eligible to claim the prize. English Heritage may require you to provide proof that you are eligible to enter the competition.
4.3 English Heritage will not accept competition entries that are:
(a) illegible, have been altered, reconstructed, forged or tampered with; or
(b) incomplete.
4.4 There is a limit of one entry per person.
4.5  English Heritage reserves all rights to disqualify you if your conduct is contrary to the spirit or intention of the prize competition.

5. THE PRIZE

5.1 The prize is a goody bag of products from the English Heritage shop to a value of £100.
5.2 English Heritage reserves the right to substitute the prize with a prize of equal or greater value.
5.3  The prize is not negotiable or transferable.

7. LIMITATION OF LIABILITY

7.1 Insofar as is permitted by law, English Heritage, its agents or distributors will not in any circumstances be responsible or liable to compensate the winner or accept any liability for any loss, damage, personal injury or death occurring as a result of taking up the prize except where it is caused by the negligence of English Heritage, its agents or distributors or that of their employees. Your statutory rights are not affected.

6. WINNER ANNOUNCEMENT

6.1 The winner of the competition will be contacted by Friday 9 March 2018.
6.2 The decision of English Heritage is final and no correspondence or discussion will be entered into.
6.3 English Heritage will contact the winner personally as soon as practicable after the Closing Date, using the telephone number or email address provided with the competition entry.
6.4 English Heritage will make all reasonable efforts to contact the winner. If the winner cannot be contacted or is not available within 14 days of the Closing Date, English Heritage reserves the right to offer the prize to the next eligible entrant selected from the entries that were received before the Closing Date.
6.5 English Heritage does not accept any responsibility if you are not able to take up the prize.
6.6 All entries submitted may be featured on the English Heritage website, social media channels and in printed publications. If you do not consent to your entry being published, please state this when sending in your entry.

8. OWNERSHIP OF COMPETITION ENTRIES AND INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY RIGHTS

8.1 English Heritage does not claim any rights of ownership in your competition entry.

9. DATA PROTECTION AND PUBLICITY

9.1 If you are the winner of the competition, you agree that English Heritage may use your name, image and town or county of residence to announce the winner of this competition and for any other reasonable and related promotional purposes.
9.2 By entering the competition, you agree that any personal information provided by you with the competition entry may be held and used only by English Heritage or its agents and suppliers to administer the competition.
9.3 All entries submitted may be featured on the English Heritage website, social media channels and in printed publications. If you do not consent to your entry being published, please state this when sending in your entry.

10. GENERAL

10.1 If there is any reason to believe that there has been a breach of these terms and conditions, English Heritage may, at its sole discretion, reserve the right to exclude you from participating in the competition.
10.2 English Heritage reserves the right to hold void, suspend, cancel, or amend the prize competition where it becomes necessary to do so.
10.3 These terms and conditions shall be governed by English law, and the parties submit to the non-exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of England and Wales.
