A range of consultants, contract archaeologists, and planning advisors use the HER to inform decision making in the planning process. It is also an invaluable source for academic and private research.

Archaeology Advisors form part of the National Planning Department:London Historic Environment Advisory Teams. They provide advice to the London Boroughs, in accordance with CLG Planning Policy Statement 5 and Historic Environment Planning Practice Guide. They advise planners, developers, archaeologists and local people on the impact of proposed development on archaeological assets. Advisors monitor the quality of archaeological work undertaken by contractors and consultants.

Some monuments are recognised as being of national or even international importance and protected under the Ancient Monuments and Areas Act 1979. It is a legal requirement to obtain consent for any works that affect scheduled ancient monuments.
