Grants for Historic Buildings, Monuments and Designed Landscapes

Grants are available for the repair and conservation of some of England's most significant historic buildings, monuments and designed landscapes.

These are mainly offered for urgent repairs or other work required within two years to prevent loss or damage to important architectural, archaeological or landscape features.

We can also grant aid project development work which can involve the preparation of specialist reports and studies, as a basis for repair or future management.

How to apply

To find out whether your project might be eligible for a grant, please read the Guidance Notes. Section 1.3 of the Guidance explains what projects can qualify for a grant.

All applications are assessed against English Heritage's National and Regional Priorities.

Please note all applications are handled by our local offices.

When to apply

You can apply for a grant under this scheme throughout the year.

We aim to give you our decision within six months, although complex or large projects may take longer to assess.

If you want a grant of £200,000 or more you should submit your application by 31 January if you want it to be considered for a grant in the following financial year. We strongly recommended that you contact your local office at the earliest opportunity.

Conditions of grant aid

All grants are covered by a contract between the recipient of the grant and English Heritage.

In most cases as a condition of the grant, you will need to provide access for the general public to see the completed work. The access arrangements will reflect the nature of the site. You will also be required to develop and implement a maintenance plan.

You will also be required to follow the Public Procurement Regulations. In most cases you will have to demonstrate that you have appointed any professional advisers and contractors in a competitive way. Please follow the link to the relevant page.
