Computers and Archaeology

What do computers have to do with archaeology?

Archaeology generates massive amounts of complex and inter-related information about how people lived in the past.  English Heritage archaeologists have used computers to manage and understand this information for over 30 years, developing methods as technology has evolved.  Now our archaeologists use the web, databases, GPS, digital mapping and digital photography alongside excavations and laboratory techniques.

How has archaeology changed with technology?

The latest computer systems can now bring together all of this information to help increase understanding of our archaeological sites and monuments.  Our archaeologists have chosen to use the Intrasis system.  Through thorough consideration of how and what is recorded, we were able to change the system to meet our needs.

Why do archaeologists need a digital system?

A digital system can bring a huge variety of archaeological information together to:

  • share with others
  • ask questions of
  • look at in different ways
  • allow many specialists to use at the same time
  • collect and look-after in one place
