Soft Wall Capping

Soft capping historic walls (placing turf on wall tops to protect them) is increasingly seen as a more effective and appropriate repair method than the more traditional, hard or mortared capping.

English Heritage and the University of Oxford have been carrying out research on soft capping to find out more about the benefits and disadvantages of the technique.  The work also considered how best to carry out soft walling capping. The results and findings of the first phase were reported at a conference at the Geological Society in London in October 2007.

The second phase of research is underway and this aims to tackle some of the unanswered questions that were raised at the conference.
