Brockhurst, one of five forts known as the Gosport Advanced Line, was built in the mid-19th century to protect Portsmouth Dockyard. Medieval castles, such as Porchester, had become obsolete with the use of gunpowder but at Fort Brockhurst some features were retained, such as a moat (originally crossed by a drawbridge) and a keep, traditionally the last line of defence.
