Bygone Bridlington

Bygone BridlingtonBridlington Bathing Carriages Working with the English Heritage Outreach department a group of elderly residence from the sea side town of Bridlington have researched archives and personal treasures to collate an interesting and informative view of Bridlington and its inhabitants over the past century.

Oral history workshops allowed the group from Christ Church Community centre to look back and tell their stories of how life in Bridlington had changed.

The town is undergoing redevelopment and the revival of Bridlington Spa Theatre has acted as a stimulus for gathering memorabilia from its colourful past. Many of the group has memories of the spa as a lively and exciting venue from their youth.

“I used to like sitting in’ balcony, looking down, watching them all.  I loved dancing, I used to love dancing! Getting dressed up, you could get dressed up then and it was really nice waltzing – not like dancing today!  It was really lovely, I used to enjoy it.”
Jean Gray

By capturing memories from this generation and producing a small eclectic  book of quotes and images the project will become a multigenerational tool for learning and a catalyst for more reminiscing and storytelling.

This resource can be used for education, through schools and basic skills groups as inspiration for creative writing and local history research.
