Belsay rolls out the White Carpet

Belsay rolls out the white carpetForget red carpet season, it’s white carpet season at Belsay Hall, Castle and Gardens in Northumberland. Families and flower enthusiasts are being urged to check out the beautiful white carpet display of snowdrops in bloom this month.

Every year in February and early March, thousands of rare and delicate snowdrops and other spring bulbs flower in the grounds. Local visitors are being encouraged to catch them now while they are still in bloom.

Around two hundred years ago, Lady Middleton, from the ancestoral family of Belsay planted the snowdrops in the gardens. As well as snowdrops, garden lovers can take a look at an abundance of scented heathers, conifers, viburnums, mahonias and yellow-berried hollies in the borders of the Winter Garden.

Adam Stenhouse, English Heritage’s head gardener at Belsay Hall, Castle and Gardens said: “People come from miles around to admire the gardens and view the flowers on display here. Now is the best time to see the beautiful blanket of snowdrops. The area is aglow with a brilliant display of these delicate flowers.  They last for about a month or so and they’re currently at their peak bloom, so blink and you’ll miss them.”

The humble snowdrop provides the most magical spectacle around Belsay at this time of year. Situated 14 miles North West of Newcastle, in the heart of the picturesque Northumberland countryside, Belsay boasts 30-acres of far-flung gardens, which offer a wealth of natural treasures that change dramatically throughout the seasons.

Belsay is currently looking for keen volunteers, interested in gardening will also have the opportunity to help manage and maintain the beautiful gardens on the estate. All equipment would be provided and anyone interested should contact the site directly.
