Celebrate St Augustine’s Day with a free guided tour of St Augustine’s Abbey
Free guided tours of the St Augustine's Abbey are on offer this Bank Holiday Monday, 26 May in celebration of St Augustine's Day.
From 10am-3pm tours conducted by Martin Taylor and other members of the Guild of Guides will tell the fascinating story of the arrival of St Augustine in Canterbury and the dissolution of its monastry during Henry VIII's reign. Visitors will also be able to take a stroll around early Saxon remains and ruins of the magnificent Norman church.
Each tour will also incorporate parts of the King's School grounds which formed a major part of St. Augustine's Abbey's former precincts and which are not usually open to the public.
Visitors can continue onto Lady Wooton's Green at 4.00pm wherethe Canterbury Commemoration Society will be unveiling title plaques on the impressive Ethelbert and Bertha statues. .
Admission cost just £4.10 for adults, £2.10 for children, £3.30 for concessions and £10.50 for a family ticket. Free for English Heritage Members.
St Augustine's Abbey is open until 30 Jun, 10am-5pm on Wed, Thu, Fri, Sat, & Sun and Bank Holiday Mondays; from 1 Jul-31 Aug, 10am-6pm on Mon, Tue, Wed, Thu, Fri, Sat, & Sun; from 1 Sep-31 Mar 2009 11am-5pm Sat, & Sun.
