Wobblicious fun at Brodsworth Hall's Jelly Festival!
Gelatine and flummery will be on the menu at Brodsworth Hall, near Doncaster, on Friday 25 and Saturday 26 July 2008, when the Victorian country house hosts its first ever Jelly Festival!
Inspired by the jelly moulds that can be seen in the Victorian kitchen within the hall itself, JellyFest 2008 will give visitors to Brodsworth Hall a chance to look at some of the amazing works of aspic and gelatine-based works of art that would have graced the table of 19th century grand houses.
The moulded delights will be created by Ivan Day, one of the world’s leading authorities on historic food. Jelly is one of his passions, and a particular area of expertise that has been developed over many years. Ivan has an extensive collection of vintage jelly moulds which enable him to create jellies of many different sizes and shapes.
“The Victorians were generally very straight-laced, but jellies were often seen as an exception to many of society’s conventions. For example, visitors will see an example of a mid-nineteenth century tiered cone jelly – reminiscent of Madonna’s famous pointy bra – which would have caused many a Victorian diner to have cried with mirth when they saw this particular jelly wobbling in a most provocative way!” says Ivan.
Visitors will see around 40-50 jellies as part of JellyFest 2008, which will be arranged in gazebos in the garden on the West Parterre at Brodsworth Hall. Throughout the two days of the event, Ivan will also be demonstrating how the different jelly designs were made, including the stunning Brunswick Star jelly which had a star running through the centre from top to bottom, and striped orange jellies.
JellyFest 2008 runs on Friday 25 and Saturday 26 July from 10.00am to 4.30pm in the grounds of Brodsworth Hall. Admission is £5.00 for adults, £4.00 for concessions and just £2.50 for children (Hall admission is extra).
