The Register of Parks and Gardens

Introduction

Kitchen Garden at Bramdean, Hampshire (c) English Heritage  Most people know that buildings which are important in terms of their history and architecture are listed and that many ancient monuments are similarly recorded and protected. It is less widely known that since the 1980s, there has been a national record of the historic parks and gardens which make such a rich and varied contribution to our landscape. This record, known as the Register of Parks and Gardens of special historic interest in England and now containing nearly 1450 sites, was established, and is maintained by, English Heritage.
