Changing London
"London is one of a handful of World Cities. It is the most important and dynamic city in Europe. A vital ingredient in that success has been its historic environment - its gardens, parks and landscapes, its waterways, its buildings great and small, its streets and public spaces - which provides the texture of the city, its quality and its diversity"
These opening words from Changing London : An historic city for a modern world. published in October 2002, set the scene for English Heritage's vision for London. Ranging over London's unique character, its sustainability, its flexibility and its inclusiveness, this important new document stresses that the historic environment is one of the main reasons for the capital's prosperity.
