EPPIC internships
Established in 2004, the first archaeological science intern, Judy White, completed the English Heritage Professional Placements in Conservation (EPPIC) programme in October 2005. The programme included the following components:
- Intensive experience in zooarchaeological analysis, with the production of two reports on assemblages from the Danebury Environs Roman Project and Windsor Castle
- 'Shadow' the Regional Science Advisors for London and the South-east, in order to gain insight into their advisory role and an awareness of environmental archaeology in developer funded archaeology
- Receive training in assessment and undertake assessment under supervision
- Produce specifications for archaeological science, for example sampling for environmental remains
- Receive guidance on health and safety and undertake risk assessments for laboratories and field projects
The second EPPIC internship in archaeological science is currently underway; Anna Russell's programme focusses primarily on the analysis of the faunal remains from the later prehistoric site of Beckford, Worcestershire (funded by the Aggregates Levy Sustainability Fund). Other components are shared with the first.
It is hoped a third EPPIC internship in archaeological science will commence in late 2006/early 2007.
