Smithfield: present, past & future
People like Smithfield. This historic and creative place has a spirit of its own, packed with architects, designers, great bars and restaurants, but did you know that part of the market complex is threatened with demolition?
How should Smithfield move with the times without losing its unique character? A recent English Heritage exhibition – entitled Market Values – investigated what makes the area so special, drawing partly on new ideas from the architect, masterplanner and ‘blue-sky thinker’ Sir Terry Farrell.
The free exhibition – in the gallery at 35 Cowcross Street, advertised on this page and elsewhere – ended on 2 November 2007 but click back and along the links to form your own ideas about what should happen to this much loved corner of our capital.
We will be updating this section as developments unfold. Bookmark www.english-heritage.org.uk/smithfield now and keeping checking back.
Smithfield is in London.
The nearest tube is Farringdon.
