Grants
English Heritage and the Heritage Lottery Fund operate a joint grants scheme for repairs to listed places of worship. Through the scheme we distribute £25m a year for the repair of some 250 historic buildings, helping to conserve their fabric and keep them in use for worship. To find out more about the scheme including how to apply, go to Repair grants for places of worship
The government (Department for Culture Media and Sport) is currently operating a scheme which returns, in the form of a grant, the full amount of VAT spent on eligible repairs and maintenance of a listed place of worship, including associated professional fees. We strongly advise congregations to apply for this grant wherever applicable. Details are available online at Listed Places of Worship Grant Scheme or by phoning 0845 601 5945 (calls charged at local rate)
Where to look for other sources of funding
A free and regularly updated online guide to relevant sources of funds is published by the Architectural Heritage Fund on the Funds for Historic Buildings website. The guide is partly funded by English Heritage.
The Church Buildings Council publishes guidance on fundraising for repairs and other works on their Churchcare website. Some of this is specific to the Church of England, but most is applicable to all places of worship.
