English Heritage is committed to increasing the standards and practice of conserving our built environment. The Conservation Department, as part of Research and Standards Group, offers technical advice to the English Heritage regional offices in relation to all aspects surrounding the deterioration of historic buildings, aspects of their specific materials, components, structure and services and the evaluation and assessment of treatment methods and materials. Much of this revolves around grant-related casework and work to our own properties in care, and this provided a focus for a programme of applied research and development. The results of this on-going and collaborative programme are regularly published research papers, technical guidance and policy literature, conferences, and training workshops.
