Heritage Protection

How is English Heritage Involved?

The role of English Heritage is to help local authorities use their powers and resources to preserve or enhance the character and appearance of their conservation areas.

Advice to local authorities

We give national advice on how local authorities should identify, designate and manage conservation areas. Our aim is to help local authorities ensure that conservation areas are set up wherever there are districts worthy of designation. See also Management of Conservation Areas.

Ludlow, Shropshire - © English Heritage The historic town centre of Ludlow, Shropshire, is one of the country's finest conservation areas. Statutory consultations

Local authorities have to notify English Heritage of applications for major developments proposed in any conservation area countrywide. This applies to developments of over 1,000 square metres. Developments by the local authority itself have to be referred to the Secretary of State and English Heritage's advice will be sought as appropriate.

Local Authorities, Area Partnership Funding

We are currently looking at how best  to deliver support to Local Planning Authorities for area partnerships schemes. This review is being conducted with our partners and other stakeholders within the sector. We hope to be able to publish the results of this review in the near future.
